From easily the worst episode so far straight to one of the best. This is just an excellent episode.
A lot of the episode relies on the interaction between Spock and the Romulan Commander. The Commander is really the first truly interesting female role that Star Trek has had, and the script and acting work together well. Kirk’s role is less important, although it was a lot of fun to see Kirk disguised as a Romulan. Shatner, as often, takes the opportunity to overact a little. But it’s reasonably restrained, and sensible within the context of the episode.
