The Manchurian Candidate is a great film, and it isn’t harmed by being fairly blatantly ripped off here. There’s a good sense of tension and suspense in the episode (as always, helped out by not putting main characters in danger – that always kills suspense for me).
This episode also marks a further development in the evolution of Star Trek’s plot arcs – while it’s not that obvious, there are ties to several previous episodes, and this sets up important points for the season finale.
