The main plot of the episode, with Quark becoming the leader of the Ferengi, doesn’t seem to know if it’s being played for laughs or not. The music and some of the actors think it’s comedy, but the staging and the other actors think that it’s meant to be serious. The story could have worked as either, but in the strange limbo it ends up in there just isn’t enough resonance..
Great Star Trek moment: the first appearance of the ‘Rules of Acquisition’, and also the beginning of the all out trend towards ‘Ferengi as merchants and nothing else’.
