Memo to the writer: no, it’s not OK to do ‘It’s all a dream’ just because it was really ‘It’s all just the transporter buffer’. It’s still a frustrating plot device. Fundamentally nothing at all that happens in this episode is important. Hoshi will be saved regardless of her actions, she’s just on a timer. It doesn’t matter how Archer reacts to her ‘death’, or how clever she is in signalling her continued existence, or even her finally summoning the courage to use a transporter again. Nothing matters, it was all just a dream.
It’s a pity, because I think the implications of the transporter are under explored. But that doesn’t turn a bad episode into a good one.
