Any relation to Fisher Price? Spoilers.
This episode feels like someone had a lot of Trek references they wanted to get off their chest, like the Harry Kim getting promoted joke. It feels a bit odd to be leaving behind the usual crew, even if we do get a couple of familiar characters to go along with it, especially as this is the second last episode.
But this is a fantastic piece of Trek, quite possibly the best that Lower Decks has done. There is an incredible amount of plot stuffed into the episode for a 25 minute show. And that doesn’t even count what is, to be honest, quite a bit of fan service with Garak, the Doctor, Dax, T’Pol and the Harrys Kim. There’s maybe an argument to have turned down the fan service a little, bit only a little.
One hidden strength is the philosophical core of the show. We have Boimler’s fatigue with the standard Trek multiverse – the same characters in different hats or facial hair. But then that’s balanced by Lucy’s joy in exploring the different possibilities of intelligent life. It’s a good and novel Trek message.
Quick hits:
-
Love the DS9 theme with the multiverse Boimler.
-
Not digging very deep for the alternate crew. But somewhere a lot of people are very happy about the canon version of Garak/Bashir.
-
Love the meta-hoke that the biggest Trek nerd of all, Boimler, is so over it.
-
What a guest star budget!
937 down.
