Belatedly (and out-of-sequence) getting to Prodigy Season 2,
I thought this was a bit of a slow and clunky start to the Season. We spend a lot of time picking up with the now-cadets (or are they?), but it’s not great at telling us much about them as characters. I know this is a kid’s show, but there was a bit too much ‘oh I hate studying’ from Dal. Hopefully Gwyn is back soon, as she’s very important to the overall dynamics.
Still, as setup for the new season it’s interesting. We’ve got a clear mission (rescue Chakotay), and some interesting temporal dynamics issues with the future timeline involved. Plenty of scope for an interesting story I hope.
Quick hits:
-
For a 24 minute show these are very long credits – nearly 2 minutes!!
-
It’s a bit jarring seeing ‘normal’ Star Trek’ people next to the main characters here.
-
Why do they need academy admission when they all seem to be in the academy already? Feels like a line of dialogue was missed.
-
Don’t love the model for Robert Picardo/EMH. Doesn’t look quite enough like him compared to Janeway/etc.
-
Nice traditional Star Trek ship unveil. Oh, and apparently at Utopia Planitia over Mars.
-
Dal’s ‘too cool for school’ attitude is quite grating.
-
Cetacean Ops goes on screen for a second series.
940 down.
