Oooh, will we get a guest appearance from 115 degrees? Spoilers.
The main plot of this episode rests on a delicate edge. It’s a ‘Mariner mentors herself’ story, which could very easily fall off into a few cliche directions – Mariner can’t spot the similarity, Mariner starts to regress to be like the junior officer. Instead the episode keeps a tight control on things, and manages to play ‘she’s just like Mariner’ for laughs more than anything else.
It had a bit of a flavour of a big callback (in this case to “Who Mourns for Adonais”) without very much payoff. Olly’s powers don’t really play significantly into the plot, and honestly just complicated things too much. I like the continuity aspect of it all, but the story of the episode just doesn’t capitalise on it,.
The Boimler b-story is really just played for laughs. We get a very long build up towards Dr T’Ana beating him senseless, and then that pays off beautifully. It was perhaps just a little bit too ‘zany’ to fit with the other half of the episode, as it really requires Boimler to have pretty serious judgment deficit.
Overall another fun episode,
Quick hits:
-
Is that some kind of Q on the ship? Inverting stuff, disobeying orders, wearing a laurel crown?
-
Ah, yep, demigod. And linked back to TOS even!
-
Boimler has some very cute figurines.
-
Oh, hello continuing plot. I’d actually forgotten about the whole alt-Boimler PADD thing.
-
Boimler is going to get himself beat.
-
Ah, it’s Romeo & Juliet.
-
There is something about Olly’s character design that just seems a bit off. The head is too big.
-
The animators had way too much fun with the cube versus sphere battle.
934 down.
